THESE TWO VASES REPRESENT THE TWO GIANT BROTHERS OTUS AND EPHIALTES WHO ARE COLLECTIVELY KNOWN AS ALOADAE, SONS OF ALOEUS HOWEVER THEY WERE IN FACT THE SONS OF POSEIDON, GOD OF THE SEA, AFTER ALOEUS’ WIFE IPHIMEDEA HAD FALLEN IN LOVE WITH HIM. THE ACT OF FILLING THE VASES WITH WATER REPRESENTS THE SECRET INFERTILITY OF IPHIMDEA. THE NAMES OTUS AND EPIALTES TRANSLATE TO MEAN DOOM AND NIGHTMARE YET IT IS SAID THAT THE TWO BROTHERS WERE BEAUTIFUL AND OFTEN DEPICTED AS HEROS SAVING THEIR MOTHER AND STEP SISTERS FROM PIRATES. EVENTUALLY APOLLO KILLED THE ALOEUS AFTER THEY ATTACKED MOUNT OLYMPUS.
